The National Executive Committee (NEC):

The NEC is made up of representatives from each section of the Party – MPs, councillors, trade unions and CLPs. Members vote for their CLP Representatives in a ballot each year. The NEC sets the Party’s objectives and oversees the running of the Party nationally.

The NEC is the governing body and administrative authority of the Party and oversees the overall direction of the party and the policy making process. It carries out this role by setting strategic objectives on an annual basis and meeting regularly to review the work of the party in these areas.

All members of the NEC are members of the NPF (the body that oversees the development of party policy through a rolling programme of policy development).

Throughout the year, NEC members participate with shadow government ministers in Policy Commissions that prepare reports on different areas of policy which are then presented to and consulted on with the party membership before going to Annual Conference.

This forms the basis of Labour’s general election manifesto.

The NEC is also responsible for upholding the rules of the Party and propriety of Labour selection processes.

Annual Conference
Annual Conference

Annual Conference.

This is the ultimate authority in the Party. Annual Conference decides the policy framework from which the next manifesto will be drawn and sets Party Rules. Annual Conference considers the policy papers prepared by the eight Policy Commissions after consulting local Parties. Members choose delegates to represent them at Annual Conference – and those delegates could include you. Seminars that take place at Conference, where ordinary members can discuss important issues directly with members of the Shadow Cabinet, and feed their ideas into the policy process.
Labour’s Annual Conference is the sovereign policy making body in the Party. Any party member can be elected by their CLP as a delegate to represent their local party, or can go along informally as a visitor. Annual Conference debates and approves the work of the NPF and Policy Commissions, and debates and votes on issues that arise outside of the NPF’s work. There are also a number of Policy.

North West Region.

Party activity within the region is overseen by the Regional Board. This body is made up of annually elected members and other stakeholders drawn from all sections and areas of the region. Regional Boards normally meet 4 times per year.

The Region also holds regular training and policy events for members. The Regional Conference, held each year around November, is a particularly good event where members are able to come together to debate important issues, speak to Labour Shadow Ministers, and share views with the Regional NPF Reps.
