As our party prepares to enter a new chapter, I want to thank Keir Starmer.
Without his leadership we wouldn’t have won a landslide election. His legacy speaks for itself. Just this week — the landmark Hillsborough Law, creating a duty of candour in public office, passed its Commons stages; and his global leadership was recognised in Europe and Ukraine.
His time as Prime Minister will also be remembered for many proud Labour achievements: lifting children out of poverty by scrapping the two-child benefit cap, bringing rail into public ownership, ending no fault evictions, day one rights to sick pay, increasing wages and creating new jobs, and finally ending the hereditary principle in the House of Lords — to name a few.
As we look ahead to the next chapter, I know that we all want the Labour government to succeed and to show that progressive, mainstream politics really can change people’s lives for the better, rewiring the country for the many, not the few.
I am confident that we can rise to this challenge and offer the country the hope and optimism it’s crying out for. I know, together, we can do that.
As your Deputy Leader, I will continue to ensure that our party remains a bridge between our communities and government — and that your voice is heard at the heart of government.
