Englesea Brook Chapel
Englesea Brook Chapel

To all members and friends of South Cheshire Labour Party

After our great victory, both in Crewe and Nantwich and also in Congleton, you may have been looking for a suitable occasion to celebrate. Well, here it is. On Sunday July 28th we will be holding our annual summer fair at the National Museum of Methodist History in Englesea Brook. You can read all about the venue at https://engleseabrook.org.uk/. The gates will be open at 2pm, and it’s expected that we will finish around 4 to 4-30pm.

Those of you who have attended in the past will know that this is a very pleasant and unique event. The Museum itself is a little gem, tucked away in the hamlet of Englesea Brook, yet only a few minutes’ drive away from most members. There are lots of exhibits showing the early rise of Methodism, inextricably bound up with the Labour Party.

We are not locked in the past, however, and there are a range of attractions being organised by branch members.

·         Our new MP Connor will be there, together with this year’s Crewe Town Mayor, Cllr Dawn Clark.

·         Live music will be provided by some of our talented members, who memorably entertained us last year.

·         Ben Wye will be running a bookstall. If you have any books that you would like to donate, please contact him on 07795-644179 or email: benwye1@yahoo.co.uk

·          Martin Edwards has kindly agreed to organise a tombola, so please contact him if you have a prize that could be donated (but in deference to our hosts, no alcohol!). His contact details : martinedwards2009@yahoo.co.uk and 07388-648139

·         Last but certainly not least, we can again have use of the pulpit! So last year’s winner, Nick Mannion, will be organising the famous “ranting contest” where anyone who fancies themselves as an orator (yes we do have some in the Labour Party) will be invited to speak for a minute on a subject chosen at random. This is guaranteed to be fun and it’s our own unique idea – so no other organisation has anything like it.

Although the sun has never failed to shine on us at this event, we are not dependent on good weather – there is plenty to see and do indoors.

The admission price of £10 per person includes a cream tea. Under16s are free and a soft drink will be included. However, if they would like a cream tea as well there will be the same charge. We have had to increase the price this year for the first time in 8 years, so put that down to the last government!

The event is by no means restricted to members so do bring family and friends. It should be a lot of fun and it helps us to build up much needed funds for the future – but of course only if we get a decent turnout. Yes of course you can turn up on the spur of the moment, but please let me know if possible, so that the museum volunteers can have an idea of how many cream teas to prepare.

I can confirm that disabled access is satisfactory, also the Museum is happy to allow small well-behaved dogs.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Peter Kent
