On Wednesday 27th October 2021, Cheshire East Southern Planning Committee discussed a proposed development of 45 affordable houses within the settlement boundary of Wrenbury village.
During the debate, Wrenbury ward councillor Stan Davies (Conservative) said he did not object to new houses, but that his objection was purely to “too many low cost houses”, arguing that the only people who would live in them were “from Crewe and places like that”.
“Living in the countryside might be the grand thing to do but when you actually get there it’s not what you thought… After about 12 months they say Where’s the pub? Where’s the betting shop?” - Councillor Stan Davies (Conservative)
Councillor Laura Smith (Labour) responded by arguing that it was wrong to characterise people wanting to move from Crewe and Nantwich into villages as a bad thing and that this should be an option to all. Councillor Smith argued that there is a housing crisis in Britain, and recent documentaries have shown examples of hundreds of people being forced to bid on a single property.
The planning application was approved by the Southern Planning Committee.
